Kandy beat Army 42-11 retains league title
By Ranjan ANANDAPPA
Kandy Sports Club retained the Caltex 'A' division League rugby title
for the ninth successive year when they defeated Army SC by 42 points (5
tries, 2 goals and a penalty) to 11 (1 try. 2 penalties) in their
penultimate league match played at Longden Place yesterday.
The winners led 13\8 at the half time.
The soldiers did well to contain the champion Kandy out fit in the
first half, but the second half proved to be disastrous for the army as
the Kandy team got their act together from the very first minute of the
second half and went on the rampage.
Winger Sanjeeva Jayasinghe opened the 'gates' for the defending
champions when he covered over fifty meters to touch down under the post
which was converted by Saliya Kumara and he crossed the army line once
again in quick succession to put his side into an impregnable position.
There after Pradeep Liyanage, Shashika Jayawardena and Danushka
Pushpakumara scored tries with Roshan Weeraratne adding the extra
points. Sanjeeva Jayasinghe opened scoring for Kandy through an
unconverted try. Army struck back when R. Meepage touched down and the
scored were 5\5. Saliya Kumara's penalty put the Kandyans ahead 8\5.
Kandy forged ahead when Fazil Marija collected a pass from Pradeep
Liyanage and pierced the Army defence. Saliya Kumara failed to add the
extra points. Kapila Knowlton fired over the penalties for Army.
Referee: Priyantha Gunaratne.
