Lanka urged to ratify Disabled' Rights Convention

+Persons with disabilities of Sri Lanka strongly urge and appeal the State authorities to ratify the United Nations Convention of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) convention allowing persons with disabilities to enjoy their human rights, fundamental freedom and dignity of the life on an equal basis with others.

International Campaign Coordinator Leonard Cheshire Disability (LCD) UK, Gopal Mitra told the local media that India and Bangladesh in the SAARC region have already signed and ratified the convention. Therefore, the people with disabilities in these countries enjoy the rights enshrined in the convention.

Though Sri Lanka has signed the convention, it has not ratified it by incorporating it in the local legal system.

"We feel that this is the right time for Sri Lanka to ratify the convention and reaffirm its commitments to the rights of persons with disabilities in this country as this is the best moment to proclaim its commitment to human rights before the international community," he said.
