Sixty IDP students take part in sports meet

Sixty sportsmen and women from welfare centres for Internally Displaced Persons are competing at the Northern Province Inter-District sports meet currently being held in Jaffna.

Jaffna is holding this sports competition after a lapse of nearly 15 years, said Northern Province Governor Maj. Gen. G.A. Chandrasiri, the chief guest.

According to the Secretary of the Provincial Education Ministry Lakshman Illangovan the 60 sports personalities are mainly from the Welfare centres in Jaffna.

"Seven hundred and twenty persons are taking part in 36 events from all five districts of the Province," Illangovan said.

The winners will participate in the National level meet scheduled to be held early next month. The Department of Sports under the Provincial Education Ministry organised the meet at the Durraiyappah Stadium in Jaffna from September 18 - 20. The meet included track and field events, cricket, basketball, netball, kabadi and several other team games.
