J'pura students released on bail

by Jayampathy JAYASINGHE

Timely police action helped diffuse a tense situation at the Sri Jayawardenapura University following the storming of the administrative building by campus students last Thursday.

Police Media Spokesman, Senior DIG Nimal Mediweka told the Sunday Observer that following the suspension of two university students by the authorities, fellow students had stormed the administrative building as a sign of protest, disrupting its work.

Following the incident, the Vice Chancellor of the University lodged a complaint at the Mirihana Police regarding the unruly behaviour of the students.

Later, the students were issued with notices to appear before the Gangodawila Magistrate Courts on Friday when the Mirihana Police reported the issue to the courts. Twenty three campus students were granted cash bail of Rs. 100,000 each by the Gangodawila Magistrate when they appeared before the Court through a lawyer on Friday.

Orders were also issued for the eight absconding students to appear before the Court on October 30.
