Eighteen teams in Zahira Super Sixteen Soccer Sevens

FOOTBALL: Eighteen school teams will dribble at the 5th annual Zahira Super Sixteen Soccer Sevens 2009 to be played on November 21 at Zahira College grounds, Maradana commencing from 8.30 a.m.

This is an inter-school invitational 7-a-side football tournament approved by the Sri Lanka Schools Football Association. The tournament will be conducted in two categories Cup Championship and Plate Championship. Teams will be drawn from the first round to qualify for the Cup or Plate Championship while the second round will be played on a knock-out basis. The champions in both the Cup and Plate will receive cash prizes amounting to Rs. 500,000. This is the first soccer tournament in the country which offers cash prizes at school level.

The main sponsors for this years tournament are: The Phone Company and Pyramid Wilmar (Pvt) Ltd. while the co-sponsors are Dialog and QP Group of Companies. Electronic media sponsors are Derana TV, Hiru and Sooriya FM.

Participating schools are: Ananda, D.S. Senanayake College, De Mazenod College, Dharmaraja College Kandy, Hameed-Al-Huseine College, Hindu College Colombo, Holy Cross College Kalutara, Isipathana College, Royal College, St. Benedict’s College, St. Joseph’s College, St. Peter’s College, Wesley College, Zahira College Colombo, Zahira College Gampola, Zahira College Mawanella, St. Mery’s College Chilaw.
