TNA represented LTTE interests - Yapa

The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) led by R. Sampanthan represented the interests of the LTTE and is still trying to revive the separatist movement, though it did not retain a military capability, said Mass Media and Information, Enterprise Development and Investment Promotion Minister Anura Priyadarshana Yapa.

Referring to the decision taken by the Sampanthan - led TNA to support Opposition candidate Sarath Fonseka at the Presidential Election, the Minister said the TNA never had any interest in the welfare of the Tamil-speaking people.

Giving them political rights was the last thing on the minds of the TNA leadership which represented the LTTE, he said.

He said in the run up to the last Parliamentary Election in April 2004, the TNA declared the LTTE as "the sole representatives of the Tamil speaking people". The Minister said a majority of the TNA membership have decided not to support Fonseka at the upcoming election.
