26th National Rowing Championships:
Royal, Bishop’s excell at Bolgoda

Royal and Bishops College took major honours at the 26th National
Rowing Championships on the 2000 meter multi-lane rowing course, Bolgoda
Lake yesterday.

the Women’s Fours Under-19 event at the National Rowing
Championship at Bolgoda Lake yesterday. In the picture are

Royal won five gold medals and Bishops College who excelled in the
girls events took three gold medals. Royal Under 19 team won the Men’s
doubles sculls with Chirath Karunanayake (B) and Jehan Samaraeskera (S)
in Men’s pairs Royal were represented by Radika Weerasekera (Captain)
and Pradeep Madumabandara (S). They also went to win the coxed Fours
with Chirath Karunanayake (B), Ajmal Sideek (2), Jehan Samarasekera (3),
Thivanka Jayatileka (S) and Danushka Perera (cox).
Royal also won the Under 16 Pairs and Fours.
The best performance in the girls events came from Bishops College
when they won the Under 16 Single and double Sculls, and fours. Anushki
Sumanapala along with her sister Asanthi Sumanapala impressed everyone,
Anushki won the girls under 16 single scull and partnering her sister
Asanthi brought the second gold medal by winning the double sculls.
Ladies College, too, won three gold medals when their under 16 and
under 19 pairs and the double sculls fared impressively.
Swarnamali Wijesinghe of Musaeus College also won three gold medals
winning the girls Under 19 single sculls, Fours , and the school girl
sculler.
Among the boys Sajeeve de Silva of S.Thomas College Mount Lavinia was
also impressive winning three gold medals in the open sculls, open fours
and and being the schoolboy sculler. Incidentally, Sajeev de Silva is
down to represent the country in Rowing at the November Asian Games to
be held in China, along with Guyan Jayatileka who was placed second in
the open sculls, but won the gold in the over 19 sculls.
University of Colombo won three gold medals in the over 19 pairs,
double sculls and and fours.
Royal won the under-16 Nalin Mendis Trophy and under-19 side won the
Eraj Wijesinghe Trophy while Air Force took the Maj. Gen. Percy Fernando
Trophy (over-19). S. Thomas’, Mount Lavinia took the Gerry Silva Trophy
for winning the Open Event in the men’s category.
In the women’s category under-16 Bishop’s College took the Flipper
Trophy. Museaus College under-19 secured the ARASL Trophy while
University of Colombo (over-19) took the Deva Henry Trophy as the
overall winners in the respective age categories. |
