Sir John Tarbat Junior Athletics:

Maris Stella and St. Joseph's Balika win boys and girls titles

ATHLETICS: Eight meet records were lowered and another equalled while St. Joseph's Balika Vidyalaya, Kegalle (girls) and Maris Stella College Negombo (boys) won the overall championships at the 41st Sir John Tarbat Junior Athletic Championships organised by the Sri Lanka Schools Athletic Association and sponsored by Milo. The meet was worked off for three days at the Bernard Aluwihare Stadium in Matale last week.

Over 4,500 athletes from 360 schools from all parts of the island including Batticaloa and Vavuniya took part in this meet.

The eight records which were broken at this meet were:

1. Under-14 boys discuss throw Mahinda Madhushan of Taldeka Junior School, Wennahapuwa 36.32 metres. The previous record of 29.17 metres was set up by H.S.D. Tissera of St. Benedict's College in 2008.

2. Under-15 girls high jump 1.65 metes by Thanuja Hemamali of Mahasen National School, Nikaweratiya. Previous record of 1.56 metres was held by Ishani Edirisinghe of Rangiri Dambulla Vidyalaya, Dambulla in 2008.

3. Under-12 boys high jump 1.53 metes by Waruna Prasad Attanayaka of Lyceum International School, Wattala. Previous record 1.50 metres by Tharuka Perera of Maris Stella College in 2003.

4. Under-15 javelin throw (boys) 57.37 metres by Chamika Karunaratne of Royal College. Previous record by Anura Silva of St. Sebastian's College, Moratuwa established in 1993.

5. Under-12 girls high jump 1.40 metres by Yelani Dias of Methodist College, Colombo. Previous record by E.K.I.S. Edirisinghe of Girls High School, Kandy in 2004.

6. Under-14 boys javelin throw 41.10 metres by Bandara Pathirana of Royal College, Colombo. previous record 40.66 metres by Chamika Karunaratne also from Royal College in 2009.

7. Under-17 Shot put girls 9.16 metres by Zeenath Imtiaz of Buddhist Ladies College, Colombo. Previous record of 8.97 by C.G.K. Kumari of Galewela Central College in 2009.

8. Under-15 boys discuss throw 46.26 by Ashan I. Jayawardena of Ananda Vidyalaya, Chilaw, Previous record 46.26 metres by Sanjuna Samaraweera of Royal Institute, Wellawatte in 2003.

9. In the girls under-14 4 x 100 relay Methodist College, Colombo timed 52.9 seconds to equal the record held by the same school since 2000.Mayor of Matale Hilmy Careem was the Chief Guest and distributed the main awards.

Age Group Championship

Under 12 boys: 1. Royal College, Colombo - 37 points, 2. St. Benedicts College, Kotahena - 22 points, 3. St. Peters College, Bambalapitiya and Lyceum International School, Wattala - 20 points each.

Under-12 girls: 1. Mahamaya Girls College, Kandy - 22 points, 2. Sir John Kotalawela Vidyalaya, Kurunegala - 17 points, 3. Methodist College, Colombo - 14 points.

Under-13 boys: 1. Maris Stella College, Negombo - 44 points, 2. Christ Church College, Matale - 30 points, 3. Maliyadewa College, Kurunegala - 13 points.

Under-13 girls: 1. Holy Family Convent, Bambalapitiya - 30 points, 2. Buddhist Ladies College, Colombo - 17 points, 3. Ladies College, Colombo - 16 points.

Under-14 girls: 1. St. Joseph's Balika Vidyalaya, Kegalle - 35 points, 2. Lyceum International School, Wattala - 19 points, 3. Ladies College, Colombo - 17 points.

Under-15 boys:1. Trinity College, Kandy - 37 points.

2. Joseph Vaz College, Wennappuwa - 32 points, 3. St. Joseph's College, Colombo - 29 points.

Under-15 girls: 1. Buddhist Ladies College, Colombo - 20 points, 2. Christ Church College, Matale - 18 points, 3. Lyceum International School, Wattala - 17 points.

Relay Champions girls: 1. Musaeus College, Colombo - 29 points, 2. Mahamaya Girls College, Kandy - 12 points, 3. St. Joseph's Balika Vidyalaya, Kegalle - 11 points.

Relay Champions Boys: 1. Maris Stella College, Negombo - 28 points. 2. Royal College, Colombo - 18 points, 3. Joseph Vaz College, Wennappuwa - 12 points.

Individual Awards

Champion - Long jump girls: S.S. Lakshini Sarangi Silva Sri Sumangala Balika Vidyalaya, Panadura.

Champion High jump girls: Thanuja Hemamali of Mahasen National School, Nikeweratiya.

Thusitha Nanayakkara Memorial Trophy awarded to Best Performer in 400 metres event: H.B. Malwattegedera of Christ Church College, Matale.

Outstanding athlete (girls): Jenavi Caldera of Lyceum International School, Wattala.

Outstanding athlete (boys): K.A.P. Jayawardena of Ananda Vidyalaya, Chilaw.

Overall champions (girls): 1. St. Joseph's Balika Vidyalaya, Kegalle - 69 points. 2. Ladies College, Colombo - 45 points, 3. Holy Family Convent, Bambalapitiya - 42 points.

Overall champions (Boys): 1. Maris Stella College, Negombo - 122 points, 2. Royal College, Colombo - 84 points, 3. Trinity College, Kandy - 45 points.
