CMC gets tough with unhygienic eateries

The Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) will come down hard on over 700
eateries, cafeteria owners and small scale hoteliers in the city and the
suburbs, who do not provide proper sanitary facilities for customers.
A recent survey revealed that many eateries, cafeterias and hotels in
Colombo 7, Fort, Slave Island, town Hall, Pettah, Maradana, Borella,
Narahenpita, Bambalapitiya, Wellawatte and the Dematagoda areas have
failed to provide sanitary facilities for customers and the facilities
do not meet hygienic conditions.
CMS Commissioner Bhadrani Jayawardhane told the Sunday Observer that
it was the responsibility of the owners of these eateries to provide
proper washrooms and toilets for customers who patronise them. She said
the wash rooms and toilets are in a dilapidated condition in some small
hotels and eating houses and customers take a risk when using them.
A senior CMC official said that some cafeterias and eating houses
near schools in colombo failed to provide even drinking water for
customers as they prefer to sell bottled water at exorbitant prices.
