Fillip for farmers in North

On the directive of Agriculture Minister Mahinda Yapa Abeywardane a program has been launched to improve the facilities of Agrarian Service Centres with a view to store fertilisers and seed paddy for the Northern farmers and to purchase their harvest, Agriculture Ministry sources said.

This program has been implemented after the end of the three decade of unrest in the Northern province.

On the directive of Minister Abeywardane plans are afoot to dispatch 155 containers, each 20 feet in length to the North within 10 days to store the seed paddy and fertiliser for the farmers for systematic distribution.

A meeting was held at the Agriculture Ministry under the patronage of Ministry Secretary and with the participation of Agriculture Department officers and World Food Program (WFP) officers in relation to this program.

The containers which are to be sent to the North will be used as temporary stores to distribute seed paddy and fertiliser to the farmers and will be used to store the Maha Season paddy harvest, the sources added.
