More women for Local Government elections

Thirty nine women in the Ampara district have come forward to contest the forthcoming Local Government election, Ceido Sri Lanka Ampara District Coordinator S. Ravichandran said.

Ceido Sri Lanka is striving to increase female representation in Local Government Institutions. This target could be achieved only by increasing the number of candidates according to Ravichandran.

There are altogether 42 Local Government institutions in the Ampara, Batticaloa and Moneragala Districts. At least 60 women from those districts should be given the opportunity to take part in the decision making process at Local Government level.

Ceido is conducting workshops in those districts to instruct and make women aware of politics and the necessity to enter this arena.

He said 39 women from Ampara have registered in Ceido, willing to contest the forthcoming Local Government election.

Twenty six applicants from Aalayadivembu, five from Pottuvil, three from Thirukkovil, three from Kalmunai and 2 from Ninthawur have been registered so far.
