EPDP confident of victory if Court upholds application
by P. Krishnaswamy
UPFA constituent Eelam People’s Democratic Party (EPDP) leader and
Jaffna district MP Minister Douglas Devananda expressed confidence that
they would win a majority of the 16 Local Government bodies in the
Jaffna district, if their application filed in the Court of Appeal
against the rejection of nominations is upheld by the Court.
The rejection of nominations was over the issue of the Tamil
rendition of the party name UPFA under whose symbol they are contesting
the polls, he said.
They are ready to go ahead with their polls campaigns for the March
17 election and look forward to the Court decision.
In the Jaffna district UPFA nominations to three Urban Councils -
Velvettithurai, Point Pedro, Chavakachcheri and 13 Pradeshiya Sabhas -
Karainagar, Kayts, Delft, Velanai, Valigamam West, Valigamam North,
Valigamam South West, Valigamam South, Valigamam East, Vadamarachchi
South West, Point Pedro, Chavakachcheri, Nallur were rejected by the
Elections Department.
UPFA Secretary Minister Susil Premajayanth told the Sunday Observer
that applications have already been filed in the Court of Appeal with
regard to the rejection of their nominations to the 16 Local Government
bodies in the Jaffna district. He said that the applications were filed
under his name.
The Tamil rendition of the party name UPFA in the nominations was in
variance with the name recognised by the Commissioner of Elections and
registered with him, sources of the Jaffna Assistant Elections
Commissioner’s office said.
The decision was taken in consultation and on the instructions of the
Commissioner of Elections, the sources said.
LG polls to the 16 Councils and the other 285 Councils will be held
as scheduled on March 17 unless there is a Court injunction deferring
the date of the polls to any of them and they are busy finalising
arrangements to conduct the polls, authoritative sources of the
Department of Elections said. |
