Israel's assistance to Lanka appreciated
by Jayampathy JAYASINGHE
Sri Lanka appreciated the assistance from Israel, particularly during
the war against terrorism and for the rehabilitation of IDPs. Israel's
assistance to Sri Lanka for rehabilitation and reconstruction in the
aftermath of the tsunami in December 2004 was also remarkable, said
Senior Minister S.B. Navinne at the celebrations to mark the 63rd
Independence Day of Israel in Colombo last week.
The Minister said the excellent relations between Sri Lanka and
Israel have expanded in the field of agriculture technology, labour
migration and defence.
The recent visit to Sri Lanka by the Israel Agriculture Minister had
led to the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with regard to
cooperation on agriculture and other biological projects. He said it was
a pleasure to represent the Government of Sri Lanka at the celebrations.
Ambassador for Israel in India and Sri Lanka Mark Sofer said, "During
times of trouble in Sri Lanka, we were there with you.
Thereafter, we are helping to build a new society after years of
terror in the country. Some of the areas that we are in Sri Lanka are
dairy farming along with a number of European countries which are active
here". Cows in Israel produce 30-40 litres of milk a day.
Some of that technology can be transferred immediately through
public-private interaction. We are already in areas such as water
management, telecommunications and medical sector," he said.
The Honorary Consul of Israel in Sri Lanka Wicky Wikramatunga
proposed the vote of thanks.
