Seizure patient needs help

Miss K.A.S. Kodikara of 17/157/3, Udayapura, Weeragoda Central Camp, Ampara suffers from complex partial seizures from the age of three years. Her MRI scan of the brain reveals a right hypothalamic glioma. At present she suffers five fits per day.

The surgery at the Asiri Surgical Hospital is expected to cost around Rs. 700,000 (Rupees seven hundred thousand) inclusive of hospital charges (without any unforeseen complications).

Hearing impediment: Appeal for help

Six-year-old Yashmi Kavindya Perera of 242/B, Nagahaduwa, Payagala is hard of hearing.

Dr. A.D.K.S.N. Yasawardhana, ENT Surgeon of Colombo Lady Ridgeway Hospital recommends that she undergoes cochlear implant. The estimated cost for the Nucleus Cochlear Implant Freedom System is around Rupees two million and two hundred forty five thousand (Rs. 2,245,000).

Green tea helps mice keep off extra pounds

Green tea may slow down weight gain and serve as another tool in the fight against obesity, according to U.S. Pennsylvania State University food scientists. Obese mice that were fed a compound found in green tea along with a high-fat diet gained weight significantly more slowly than a control group of mice that did not receive the green tea supplement, said Joshua Lambert, assistant professor of food science in agricultural sciences.


Oprah Winfrey highest-earning woman

Although she no longer hosts a top- rating television talk show, Oprah Winfrey still keeps her money- making title as the highest-earning woman in entertainment, according to latest Forbes magazine. The former talk show host has earned 290 million U.S. dollars from May 2010 to May 2011, beating Lady Gaga, the second-place earner by a whopping 200 million dollars, staying on top of Forbes ' list of Hollywood's Highest Earning Women.
