Films on Sri Lanka’s past

A Special screening of selected documentary films and newsreels produced by the Government Film Unit during the early post-Independence period will be presented by The Goethe Institut in partnership with the Government Film Unit, Department of Government Information at the Goethe Institut, No. 39, Gregory’s Road, Colombo 07 on Wednesday, November 30 at 7 p.m.

These films form part of a larger collection of Sri Lanka’s finest historical and artistic documentary films produced during the early years of Independent Ceylon and upto about 2008, now available in digital format.


Buddhist arts and culture festival in India

A multi-disciplinary festival of Buddhist arts and culture will be held in New Delhi from tomorrow to Thursday. The festival, spread across several venues, will host performance troupes and screen Buddhist cinema from Sri Lanka, Nepal, Japan, Cambodia, Korea, Bhutan, Ladakh, Shillong, Arunachal Pradesh and Assam. It will be presented by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) to coincide with the Global Buddhist Congregation to commemorate the 2,600th year of the Enlightenment of the Buddha. – IANS


Kandy YMCA X'mas carols

The annual X'MAS carol service of the Kandy YMCA will be held today at 4.30 pm at the Presbyterian Church, D.S. Senanayake Veediya, Kandy.

The YMCA Choir will be directed by Neson George and backed by Neson George Quarter and will sing carols in Sinhala, Tamil as well as in English. Rt. Rev. George, Shantha Kumar Francis, Bishop of Kurunegala will be the guest speaker.


Honorary titles to mark UN anniversary

An award ceremony to confer honorary titles to mark the 66th anniversary of the United Nations and the International Peace Day and the 18th anniversary of the National Peace Association was held recently at the BMICH.

Minister of Culture and Aesthetic Affairs T.B. Ekanayake and the President of National Peace Association Prof. Ranbandhara Jayawardhane were present.

Rev. Fr. Mark Fernando of the Roman Catholic church, President, Sri Lanka Baptist Church Rev. Priyantha Wijegunawardhana, Rev. Rohan Munasinghe, Rev. Mrs. Anula Munasinghe of the Negombo Calvary Worship Centre and Rev. Eraj de Mel of Assembly of God Nawinna – Maharagama were awarded honorary titles of Shasthra Wisharada, Samaja Sewa Vibooshana and Dewa Dharmacharya

(Reverend Doctor).


Anura College PPA to felicitate teachers

A tribute program organised by the Past Pupils’ Association of Anura Central College, Yakkala to appreciate the services of the retired teachers and past pupils will be held on December 24 at 9.00 a.m. in the school hall.

The purpose of the program is to pay tribute to the retired teachers for their untiring effort in uplifting the fame of the school as well as for the past students who are serving in different positions in the country.

Book launch today

The book launch of Nihanda Mehewara , written by former Director of Special Education K. Piyasena Perera will be held at the National Library and Documentation Services Board auditorium, Independence Avenue, Colombo 7 today, at 3.30 pm, under the patronage of Senior Minister Good Governance and Infrastructure Facilities Ratnasiri Wickramanayaka.

Ministers Bandula Gunawardane, Susil Premajayantha, Vijith Wijemuni Soysa, Kalakeerthi Edwin Ariyadasa, Dr. Jayatissa de Costa, ANCL Chairman Bandula Padmakumara and Dr. Tudor Weerasinghe will also address the gathering.
