Ryle, Zaffar and Vinod provide the sparks at Junior Golf

GOLF: Ryle de Silva (Gold Division), Zaffar Sikkander (silver Division)and Vinod Weerasinghe (Bronze Division) stole the limelight by winning their respective divisions at the annual Sri Lanka Open Junior Golf Championship 2011 organised by the Sri Lanka Golf Union (SLGU) and worked off at the Royal Colombo Golf Course during last week. This golf championship was sponsored by Prima Bread.

The Secretary of the Sri Lanka Golf Union Ana Punchihewa said it was encouraging to see so many young golfers especially from Kandy and Nuwara Eliya participate along with the golfers from Colombo and this augurs well for the game.

Ryle de Silva, all the way from America took away the 'plum' the Gold Division for the golfers between the age of 15 to 18 in the 18-hole championship. He scored 74 in the first round with the runner-up Sachin de Silva one shot behind with 75 in the first round. But Ryle de Silva took control of the championship in the second, getting a fine 69 two under par against 78 by Sachin de Silva and this seven point lead proved to be decisive and hard to bridge in a closely contested game.

Ryle de Silva farther extended his lead by getting 76 in the third round against 80 by Sachin de Silva, thus romping home easy winner by a clear 14 strokes. Chanaka Perera finished third getting a total of 241 with 77 in the third as his best.

The Silver Division Championship for golfers between the ages of 11-14 was won by Zaffar Sikkander of Royal Colombo Golf Club with a three round total of 256 against the runner-up Prashan Peiris' total of 256 - just two strokes behind in a close contest.
