City Traffic Police to ‘silence’ errant motorists

The City Traffic Police will take stern action against motorists and
motor cyclists who fix specially manufactured silencers that release
unusual noises while driving. According to a spokesman for the Motor
Traffic Department, no motorists or motor cyclists could use silencers
that release unbearable noises as it violates the Noise Pollution Act.
City Traffic Police, SSP Chula de Silva told the Sunday Observer that
vehicles with such silencers are not permitted to ply on roads or
highways on the ground that they cause severe inconvenience to motorists
and pedestrians.
He said these silencers are generally used by young motorists,
especially motor cyclists to seek undue attention.
“A large number of persons who used such silencers in their vehicles
was taken into custody in Colombo and the suburbs recently. More Police
personnel have been deployed at main junctions during peak hours to
crack down on those who violate this rule.”
SSP Chula de Silva warned motorists and motor cyclists to refrain
from fixing such silencers to their vehicles and added that the
silencers now used should be removed forthwith.
He said that people are not permitted to install different horns as
these are used only by hospital ambulances and vehicles used by higher
ups.
