Eranda leaps to new SL record

One Sri Lanka record and four meet records took a beating on day two
at the 90th Athletic National Championships held at the Sugathadasa
Stadium yesterday.

In the men’s triple jump event Army’s Eranda Dinesh Fernando broke a
six year old record with a new mark of 16.37 metres bettering the
previous 16.26 metres set by S.D. Weerasinghe in 2006. In the process he
also bettered the existing meet record.
Among the other new meet record breakers were Dilhani Lekamge in the
women’s javelin throw with a distance of 55.76 metres passing the
previous best 55.07 metres set by Nadeeka Lakmali of the army in 2008.
In the women’s 800m final N.M. Dilrukshi (Army) clocked 2.04.97 to erase
the previous 2.08.23 by D.H.M. Priyadharshini of the army in 2003. The
second and third place winners D.A.S. Samanmali of the air force and
K.A.D. Sandakanthi also from the air force had new marks in the women’s
800m race with the timing of 2.06.24 and 2.06.95 respectively.
Athletes from the three armed forces dominated the proceedings only
Harshini Wijesiinghe of the Mercantile Athletic Association won the
women’s 100m hurdles event with a timing of 14.26 seconds. G.A.
Dayananda from the Sri Lanka Schools Athletic Association was placed
second with a timing of 14.60 seconds.
A heavy downpour accompanied by thunder and lightening during the
latter stages brought the meet to a halt with a couple of events still
to be worked off. As usual today, the final day the men’s and women’s
100m sprint final will be worked out at 3.30 pm and 3.40 pm respectively
followed by the men’s and women’s 400m finals at 4.oopm and 4.10 pm. It
will be followed by the women’s 1500m final and the men’s 5000m race.
There will also be a boys and girls invited relay. In the women’s puff
shot Navy’s M. Muthunayake lobbed a distance of 14.50m to better the
previous 14.24m.
