CEB to call tender for mobile generators

The Ceylon Electricity Board announced that it would call for tenders for the procurement of 50 megawatt mobile generators which can be shifted to various locations which need power the most during a power outage.

Spokesperson for the CEB, Sulakshana Jayawardena told the Sunday Observer that tender documents have been prepared and it has been submitted to the procurement committee for approval. When inquired if there were any plans to increase tariffs towards the latter part of next year, he added that the CEB would only consider it as a last resort should the projects fail to meet energy demands. He said that the CEB was hopeful that many of the proposed short-term plans will avert the crisis.

“We will build a 300 megawatt of LNG power plant at Kerawalapitiya, 100 megawatt of duel fuel, which we can convert to a barge mounted power plant at Hambantota, 100 megawatt of wind power at Mannar, 20 megawatt wind power at Chunnakam, 20 megawatt of solar power in Polonnaruwa and Valaichchenai,” he said.

“We have also launched a solar power project where consumers can give back energy to the grid. We hope to get 100 megawatt from this project by 2018 and 200 megawatt by 2020 through this initiative,” he said adding that these additions will bridge the forecast 500 megawatt deficit.
