Beautiful wild flowers of Sri Lanka By Jayanthi Liyanage "Beautiful wild flowers of Sri Lanka" captures on poster for us, an exquisitely-painted glimpse into Sri Lanka's amazingly rich legacy of endemic and introduced species of wild flowers. The poster is an attempt by Youth Exploration Society of Sri Lanka (Y.E.S.) to jolt the consciousness of the island's growingly discerning schooling-population and the public-at-large, to appreciate and preserve our treasured floral heritage. Amongst a series of programs to celebrate a dedicated 18th year at its home-base, Royal Botanic Gardens, Peradeniya, the Society will launch the poster in Kandy on January 8 at 10.00 a.m. at the Auditorium of the D.S. Senanayake Public Library. The young painter, Prabath Samarasooriya, is himself an enthusiastic explorative member of the society, as his excruciative and riotous dip into our native botanical splendours obviously shows. The poster spells out vernacular and scientific names for each flower and these wild beauties, orchids of natural habitats prominent among them, are readily identifiable. The poster is sponsored by Community Environmental Initiatives Facility Component of Environment Action 1 Project under Ministry of Forestry and Environment. The launch will be attended by D.B. Sumithrarachchi, Project Co-ordinator, scholars and many school children for whom a round of lectures on "Wild flowers of Sri Lanka" will be conducted on the occasion. Y.E.S. is committed to study and promote bio-diversity concerns specially among school students. Check for the poster at all leading bookshops. |
