No increase in power cut for next 14 days

Power and Energy Minister Karu Jayasuriya said yesterday that there will be no further increase in the existing power cuts for the next two weeks.

The CEB will take every possible step to lift the power cut or not to increase the existing power cut further after reviewing the current situation at the end of these two weeks, the Minister added.

Addressing the media during his inspection tour of the Kelanitissa power station yesterday, the Minister said the 115 MW thermal power plant at Kelanitissa which is now being repaired will also be added to the grid in mid-February to ease the situation.

The 115 MW thermal power plant added to the national grid in 1997 following the 1996 power crisis is now being refurbished by the CEB.The Minister said that in keeping with pledge given to the public by him the Ministry will publish an advertisement this week calling for tenders to purchase emergency power from the private sector.

He said the CEB expects to purchase 60 MW of power under short term conditions as the power transmission system of the CEB allows only to absorb 60 MW to the system. "We are trying our best not to heap further burdens on the people as we know the inconvenience they face due to the existing power cuts.

I am ready to even step down from my Ministerial portfolio if I fail to keep my promise within 180 days," the Minister added.
