Workers Housing from February

The " Workers Housing Concept" (Kamkaru Nivasa) will be implemented by the Government in February under a special program initiated by the Employment and Labour Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe. The initial target is for 10,000 houses to be constructed countrywide during the first phase of the program for the benefits of the workers with no abode of their own.

Minister Samarasinghe highlighted the program at the National Labour Advisory Committee Meeting he had with a section of country's prominent trade union and employer representatives at the Labour Ministry auditorium on Thursday. The representatives had extensive talks with the Minister on a number of employment and economic problems faced by member. Labour Commissioner General Mahinda Gammanpila and Labour Secretary Mahinda Madihahewa were present at the meeting.

At the outset Minister Samarasinghe explained the economic problems faced by the Government at present.

" We will implement a National Employment Policy (NEP) before the end of this month within the Government's 100 day development program announced by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe".

" Our main objective is to create an economic development environment in the country especially for the benefit of foreign investors who are expected to come to Sri Lanka to commence large scale business ventures and introduce new employment avenues".

" Meanwhile we have another idea of launching the concept of "Job Market" and these job markets will be conducted at every district with the participation of the owners of large, medium and small scale enterprises." he said.

The job markets will help thousands of job seekers in line with their educational qualifications and experiences.

Employers' Federation of Ceylon, Director General Gotabaya Dassanayake welcomed the decisions taken by the Minister to improve the economic standards of the country.

" We personally thank you for your tireless efforts to improve industrial relations, provide security to our business enterprises, and provide houses for workers. Sri Lanka Nidahas Sevaka Sangamaya , General Secretary Leslie Devendra also addressed the meeting.
