Living standard of rural women to be upgraded

A series of new development programs implemented by the Women's Affairs Ministry, especially to upgrade the living standards of rural women, is on the cards under the 100 Day Program of the government.

A major implementation program, according to Minister Amara Piyaseelee Ratnayake, is the establishment of a 'Safe House' for women who have been victims of domestic violence. " This will be established in the Colombo district where women can seek legal assistance easily and even shelter", Minister Ratnayake said.

Another eight women's and children's desks at police stations will also be established one of them will be in the North and the East.

"We are going to establish a Women's Commission which was recommended by the Women's Charter. A woman who has been sexually abused or battered by her spouse can complain to this Commission which will hold a thorough investigation and direct them to the necessary institutions for legal assistance for a speedy solution", she pointed out.

Five Day Care Centres and five Counselling Centres will also be established under the 100 Day program.

Minister Ratnayake said the Ministry intended to promote young women into politics. " We have already sent letters to party leaders to give more chances for young women for the forthcoming Provincial Council election. Of the total number of candidates for the Provincial Council election, 40 percent has been granted to young candidates. Our aim is to increase the number of female candidates at least to 20 percent", she said.

In a bid to provide financial assistance for women who do not have economical stability, the 'Vanitha' Fund which will give grants to start self employment ventures which will be established soon. Four 'Vanitha' banks will also be set up under this development program.
