Shankar Dharmaratne wins Sport Clay Championship Shankar Dharmaratne of Sports Shooting Association won the inaugural Sporting Clay Championship held in Nuwara Eliya recently. With a score of 42 Shankar Dharmaratne came on top, with Nalin Wickramasinghe of Sort Shooting Club of Nuwara Eliya taking second place with 38 and Anil Peiris of Negombo Rifle Club third with 37. Shooters from many clubs were seen in action. There were a 11-member team from the STF. Then there teams from Sport Shooting Club of Nuwara Eliya, Sport Shooting Association Negombo Rifle Club, Hill Country Shooting Club and Sport Shooting Club of Colombo. While Dharmaratne won, two others from the same club - Mac Arthur Guneratne and Janaka Wickramasurendra combined together and the trio took the bronze medal with 96 targets in the team championship. Team championship was won by Sport Shooting Club of Nuwara Eliya with a score of 102 targets. The team consisted Shirantha Peiris, Asiri Wickramasinghe, Nalin Wickramasinghe and veteran shooter Elmo Rodrigo. Runners-up were Sri Lanka Police team consisting ASP Sunil Guruge, IP PDG, Walter, IP A. S. Jayasinghe, IP Pigera with a score of 98 targets. This was a National Rifle Association sanctioned event and the entire event was designed, by secretary Janaka Wickramasurendra. The event consisted five stages (Stands) and ten shots to count from each. The first was a high over head Incomer which looked very easy but only a few were able to get a full score. Stand No. 2 was a straight flushing out going shot that required quick snap shot to break within range before it disappeared in the foliage. The No. 3 stand simulated a left to right incoming crosser that whizzed close to the shooter. No. 4 was a rising left to right target and No. 5 was the fastest over head shot of the day. |
