Three women register to be trained as rugby referees by KANDY SPORTS CORR The Central Province Rugby Football Referees Society in conjunction with the Central Province Rugby Football Union's two-day workshop for referees and referee recruits at the Kandy Sports Club premises will conclude today (Sunday) at Nittawela. The workshop is expected to commence at 9 a.m. today. Leading rugby referees like Tony Amith, Mahinda Jayawardena, Sam Samarasekera and Dilroy Fernando are expected to conduct this workshop with the President of the CPRFRS Brigadier Jupana Jayawardena handling all arrangements with the CPRFU President Maurice Perera. At present, the Central Province Rugby Football Referees Society has a membership of nearly 40 and is keen on increasing this further to meet the heavy demands during the rugby season. Among the early registrants were three ladies from the hill country who are already playing women's rugby and they are keen on handling the whistle and also handle coaching in ladies rugby. At present, rugby matches involving women are handled by men and it makes the game more interesting if the games are handled by the ladies - thus making it an all-ladies affair. The President of the Central Province Rugby Referees Society Brigadier Jupana Jayawardena said that there are nearly thirty rugby tournaments (clubs, schools, services, and mercantile) being conducted at various levels and with the development of rugby in the provinces, there will be more fixtures within the provinces in the far flung areas. In addition, there will also be inter-provincial rugby matches involving the age groups of under 19, under 17, under 15 and under 13 which are to be played shortly. The demands for referees for these matches will have to be met and a plan be drawn to get sufficient referees. |
