Local
company helps CEB to reduce power losses
by Elmo Leonard Bela International (Private) Ltd., a local company involved in the electricity sector, intends to minimise power losses in Sri Lanka with the use of its products. The company says its products will help minimise power losses during transmission. Bela markets products from Germany's Maschinenfabrik Reinhausen. This company has what is called Reinhausen Power Quality Management, which is utilised worldwide in the economic use and distribution of electricity. Bela, which has been in Sri Lanka for six years, recently installed 90 MVA Capacity Banks at five substations under the second power sector expansion project of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB). These power stations are in Puttalam, Panadura, Habarana, Kurunegala and Kiribathkumbura. The total cost of the project was US$ 12 million. This project helps the CEB to maintain quality power and reduce losses in transmission. Of the total energy transmitted, four to six per cent is lost during transmission. Twenty five per cent of this loss could be saved by correcting the power factor through effective management. With capacitors, it is possible to gain more transmission capacity on the same transmission lines, Bela Managing Director Chanaka Benjamin said. The saving on electricity bills in industry amounts from 10 to 40 per cent, depending on use. Bela also installs power lines and electricity equipment for Lanka Electricity Co Ltd. and Lanka Transformers Ltd. |
