Project
to support plantation resident communities
The Ministry of Estate Infrastructure and the World University Service of Canada (WUSC) have signed a memorandum of understanding for the implementation of the Plantation Communities Project. The Plantation Communities Project is a four-year project funded by the Canadian government through the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) in line with Canada's Overseas Development Assistance objectives and the CIDA Country Framework for Sri Lanka. CIDA selected WUSC to be the Canadian executing Agency for the project with lead responsibility for project implementation. The Ministry of Estate Infrastructure will serve as the lien ministry for the project on behalf of the Sri Lankan government. The project will support plantation resident communities by strengthening their capacity to influence the decisions that affect them, helping to create opportunities for economic independence; supporting improved lines of communications and occupational health and safety in the workplace; and facilitating improved inter-relations between plantation residents and neighbouring village communities. A significant emphasis of the project will be to support initiatives that promote women as equal partners in the household, the workplace and in the development of their communities. A participatory multi-stakeholder approach will be used for project implementation. With its office in Kandy, the Plantation Communities Project's current area of operation includes the districts of Nuwara Eliya, Kegalle and Kandy. The memorandum for the implementation of project was signed in the ministry of estate infrastructure by M.B.C. De Silva, secretary of this Ministry and W.D. Grahm Field Director Plantation Communities Project of WUSC. |
