China
as a benchmark for competitiveness
Effective deployment of human resources and productivity improvement are important to improve competitiveness and prepare business organisations to face challenges internationally. This was stated in a letter addressed to the Minister of Employment and Labour Mahinda Samarasinghe from the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce (CCC) as suggestions to the 100 day programme. It is further stated that CCC totally supports the submissions made by the Employers Federation of Ceylon. "We believe that an effective dialogue with stakeholders on the suggested reforms will be greatly facilitated by studying the conditions in China as a benchmark for competitiveness and economic growth," the letter stated. The areas that Sri Lanka can study are competition, labour market practices, productivity of operations and flexibility of business operations. A fact finding mission to the key industrial provinces of China was suggested. The mission team may include officials from the Ministry, trade union leaders and members of the Employers Federation of Ceylon. "Once the visit is concluded, we recommend that the stakeholders draw up a necessary framework and strategy to improve competitiveness, develop the economy and increase the living standards of the people of Sri Lanka," states the letter. |
