Palmyrah
Development Board to open Katpaham Sales Centre in Kataragama
The Palmyrah Board Chairman, Ponniah Sivapatham has taken steps to improve the quality of palmyrah handicraft items and to make it to international standards. In accordance with the governments 100 day accelerated programme, he recently visited Mannar, Vavuniya, Kilinochchi and Mullativu areas and has instructed the authorities in the palmyrah industry in these areas to take maximum effort to improve the quality of palmyrah products. With a view to improving the quality of the handicrafts items and to bring them to export quality standard he intends to get down instructors from the North and East and give a month's intensive training. Since there is a lack of adequate nutritional food for school children living in welfare centres in the Jaffna district nutritional food will be provided. The Chairman is making necessary arrangements to send nearly 4000 bottles of fruit drinks every month to these centres. This is the first time the Chairman of the Board with a view to popularising palmyrah based products intends to open a Katpaham sales centre at Kataragama. The Treasury has granted approval for the exemption of 50% excise duty on palmyrah arrack produced by the Triccam Distillery. |
