Tri
Star's service to garment industry laudable - Sajith Premadasa
"I am aware that the Tri Star Group which had rendered an immense service in playing a major role in setting up garment factories in the villages under the 200 Garment Factories Programme launched by my father the late President Ranasinghe Premadasa was subjected to step-motherly treatment during the last few years. It is our duty to safeguard such a venture which had given employment to several thousands of people. I assure you I will use all powers at my command to help the Tri Star Group," said Mr. Sajith Premadasa, Deputy Minister of Health and MP for Hambantota District. Mr. Premadasa was the chief guest at the certificate awards ceremony of the Tri Star Academy of Apparel Technology held at the BMICH recently. Over 250 trainees who underwent training in different discipline in garment manufacture free of charge received their certificates. Mr. Premadasa and Mrs. Jalani Premadasa were received on arrival at the BMICH by Tri Star Chairman Deshabandu Kumar Dewapura and Mrs. Shereen Dewapura. At the ceremony, Mr. Kumar Dewapura was felicitated with the presentation of a special gold plaque by grateful employees of Tri Star in appreciation of his efforts in giving employment to a large number despite facing many odds and also producing skilled personnel for the industry in general besides the services he had rendered towards their social and economic well-being. Mr. Premadasa said that the Tri Star Group was a venture now firmly rooted in the life of the nation. It had contributed immensely not only towards economic development of the country by being responsible for a large slice of the country's foreign exchange earnings but also in social well-being of the people by providing employment to several thousand of the rural and urban poor thus raising their standards of living. Deshabandu Kumar Dewapura recalled how he started his first factory with 10 machines and 15 employees and had the strength to develop it to be one of the largest garment manufacturers in the world. He said that he owed this to his dedicated employees. He said it was President Premadasa who raised the garment industry to the level of making it as the biggest foreign exchange earner to the country and at the same time giving employment to thousands of youth under the 200 Garment Factories Programme. Tri Star opened 18 factories under this programme. It was for this reason that they invited Mr. Sajith Premadasa to be the chief guest at this ceremony. Mr. Dewapura also announced that as Tri Star's contribution to government's 100-day programme and as a tribute to the late President Premadasa, he would take action to open two academies to train youth in the Hambantota District. Mr. Sarath de Silva, Senior Group Deputy Chairman delivered the welcome address and Mr. Ranjith Ekanayake, Group Deputy Chairman and Head of the Academy, delivered the vote of thanks. |
