St Bridget's celebrates its centenary

St. Bridget's Convent will be celebrating their centenary this year which falls on February 1, 2002. They started their celebrations on February 1, 2001, at the school premises.

St. Bridget's over the years has carved out a niche for themselves as one of the leading girls' schools having produced such illustrious personalities as President, Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, who is the first woman President of Sri Lanka and the first woman Prime Minister in the World, the late Siramavo Bandaranaike, in 1960.

One of the highlights of the programmes year was the play produced by Indu Dharmasena who is well renowned for her productions.

The school has much to be proud of, as there are many who have excelled in both academic and non-academic fields. P>The celebrations began with school day celebrations on February 1, 2001 with a Holy Mass and the investiture of prefects followed by a fellowship of past pupils and the launch of the web page.

Then on March 6, 7 and 8, 2001, a gala sports event was held at the Sugathadasa Stadium to honour and recognise all past and present athletes. A combined band display by the primary and collegiate schools followed. Torch bearers (past games prefects) and athletes ran from the school to the Stadium.

A Lenten programme was held for years 4, 5, 6 at the collegiate levels.

In May the community development projects were held with the projects conducted at orphanages, elders' homes, hospitals and under privileged schools. On May 6, a blood donation campaign was held. On June 1 a fun day - for primary and collegiate school was held. June 6, 7 and 8 saw the invitation Girls School Netball Tournament and the feast of the Corpus Christi. From June 25-29th 2001 an Inter school Bible Competition was held and the centenary walk was held on July 29, 2001.

The highlight of the sporting events was the Invitation Girls School Basketball Tournament on August 2, 3 and 4.

There was an eye camp at Anuradhapura and this was followed by a seminar on the empowerment of women on the 21st, 22nd and 23rd of September, 2001.
