Britain backs peace process

The British High Commissioner, Linda Duffield reiterated Britain's continued support for the steps both the Government of Sri Lanka and the LTTE are taking to further the peace process.

The British envoy was making her comment on Friday on the current issue of de-proscribing the LTTE.

Regarding the lifting of the ban on the LTTE, the British Commissioner said it was left for the Government of Sri Lanka to decide.

"Such a move would not directly affect the UK's position. The decision to proscribe the LTTE in the UK was taken in accordance with the criteria set out in the Terrorism Act 2000. The proscription of organisations in the UK under that Act is a matter for the Home Secretary. Before reconsidering his decision to proscribe an organisation, the Home Secretary would have to be satisfied that the organisation in question had demonstrated a complete and convincing renunciation of terrorism," she said.
