Rohana leads Sri Lanka's challenge at All-India golf tourney
by LAL GUNESEKERA A former Sri Lanka amateur champion and the country's leading golfer Anura Rohana, who won the Bangladesh title earlier this month for the second occasion, will once again be leading Sri Lanka's challenge at the All-India Amateur Championship to be worked off in Kolkatta (Calcutta) from February 10 to 17. The President of the Sri Lanka Golf Union (SLGU) Shiran de Soysa, told the Sunday Observer that Rohana, who also won the Malaysian title in 1999, will be joined for the All-India Amateur Championship by Lalith Kumara and young Jehan de Saram, while the fourth member of the team is to be selected soon. The Lankans are scheduled to leave the shores early February. De Soysa also disclosed that Sri Lanka will also be represented at the Pakistan Amateur Championship to be staged in Islamabad in April, while the Sri Lanka Amateur Championship has been scheduled for end September-October on the Ridgeways of the Royal Colombo Golf Club (RCGC). He also said that the South Asian Association of Regional Co-operation (SAARC) Team and Individual Championship is to take place in February-March in either New Delhi or Bangalore, while Sri Lanka will host the tournament next year (2003), but needs the support of the Sri Lanka government. The SLGU needs at least Rs. 3 to 4 million to conduct this competition. He further said that it was difficult to find good women players to compete at the Queen Sirikit Cup Team and Individual Championship scheduled to be staged in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in April. One leg of the Indian Pro-Circuit too is to be worked off in Sri Lanka in September where over 100 professionals will vie for honours. The total prize money is about US Dollars 35,000, but Tiger Sports Marketing (Pvt.) Limited of India will also assist the SLGU in finding the sponsors. Meanwhile, Henk Stevens the teaching pro from Holland arrived in the country last Thursday (January 24) for an one-month assignment and will be involved with the national pool comprising about 10 players including Amrith de Soysa, develop the junior pool also of about 10 players and take on some promising players, which includes the son of former "ace" golfer, K. A. Nandasena Perera. |
