Ten
shuttlers picked for Thomas Cup and Uber Cup tourneys
Ten players (five men and five women) have been selected to represent Sri Lanka at the Thomas Cup and Uber Cup preliminaries to be staged in Eindhoven, Netherlands from February 17 to 24. The five men's shuttlers are Manjula Fernando, Duminda Jayakoddy, Niluka Karunaratne, D. D. Ranasinghe and Udaya Wanasinghe, while the five women's players are Chandrika de Silva, Nadeesha Gayanthi, Thilini Jayasinghe, Sureni Nandasiri and Sriyani Deepika. The President of the Sri Lanka Badminton Association (SLBA), Dr. A. R. L. Wijesekera, who will be the manager, told the Sunday Observer that Karunaratne (reigning national singles champion) has undergone an operation and will have to prove his fitness, while Dilhani de Silva, a top women's player, was not considered as she was injured. Sri Lanka are in Group 'F' for the Thomas Cup together with Finland (seeded), Bulgaria, Ukraine and Norway, while in the Uber Cup, Sri Lanka play beside Bulgaria (seeded), Hungary, Belarus and Iceland in Group 'E'. The coach of the Sri Lanka team is Pushpakumara, while the captain and
