by LESLIE FERNANDO

Sri Lanka players will participate in nine disciplines - athletics, badminton, boxing, gymnastics, netball, rifle shooting, wrestling, squash and weightlifting at the Commonwealth Games to be held from July 23 to August 4 in Manchester, England. The Lankan contingent is expected to comprise 62 competitors.

At the Manchester Games, a total of 16 disciplines will be worked off.

Sri Lanka netball team which won the Asian Championships (15 players) and 8 rifle shooters are certain to participate.

It is reliably understood that 12 to 13 athletes will be included into the squad according to the Amateur Athletic Association sources.

The preliminary entries should be submitted for the Commonwealth Games by January 25 while the final selection should be sent to the organisers by June 25.

This year's Commonwealth Games motto will be 'One chance-one game.'

Over 4000 competitors from 72 countries are expected to participate in this year's Commonwealth Games and Manchester City is ready to host the festival.
