Nisitha
and Udeni under-10 chess champs
Nisitha Jayatilleke and Udeni Vindy emerged boys and girls under-10 champions at the Age Group chess tournament conducted by the Colombo Chess Club at St. Joseph's College, Colombo recently. Meanwhile, the under-10 champions were Devin Perera (boys) and Lihini Dharmasekera (girls). The other placings in the two age categories were under-10 boys - Inthiqhab Majid (runner-up) and Kasun Liyanapathirana (third place), under-10 girls - Kalani Karunatilleke (runner-up), Uthpala Gurusinghe (third place), Naveen Alwis finished runner-up in the boys under-8, Oshadi Kottachchy in third position. Suspeshela Thilakawardena became runner-up in the girls under-8 and Sachini Ranasinghe in third position. Colombo Chess Club appointed a new committee for the year 2002. The committee was selected by the members of the club. The new committee members are selected from the chess clubs of the best schools in the Western Province. The committee members are - President - Sajitha de Mel, Vice-President - Amila Basura, Secretary - Udayanthi Wijesundera, Assistant Secretary - Nayanthi Perera, Treasurer - Kasun Tanthrimudalige, Assistant Treasurer - Danushi Abeynayake, Committee Members: Anupa Perera, Shenal Hedwige, Malinda de Silva, Nadeesha Gammanpila, Kanishka Prematilake, Gihantha Ratnayake, Gayan Perera, Ashan Kumar. The newly-appointed committee will organise the all-island individual tournaments for age groups of under-12, 14, 16, 18, 20 and over 20 next month.
