First-ever Standard Rally on Feb. 2 and 3

by PELHAM JURIANSZ

The Motor Racing Association(MRA) headed by Richard de Zoysa will hold its first ever Standard Rally in accordance with the Federation International de L'Automobile (FIA) regulations at the Pelwatte Sugar Industries Buttala, Wellawaya on February 2 and 3.

Speaking at the press conference at the Pro Cart racing conference room at the Millennium Park, Richard de Zoysa said that this rally will be different to other rallies. "It will comprise of two legs and the total course will be over a distance of 242.8 kms."

Each rally driver will be responsible for keeping his or her pace notes.

One of the main areas of contention was the fact that if a driver sees another driver in the rear view mirror he should let him pass.

The rally will start at 7.30 a.m. sharp and the drivers will have to be properly attired, otherwise they will be disqualified.

Bri Ponnambalam will act as the chief starter and according to Richard de Zoysa, there couldn't be a better person to start a race.

No doubt a familiar face at motor sporting events, the late Edward Mason will be sorely missed.

There will be thirty competitors facing the starter's flag.

Dinesh Deheragoda will act as the clerk of the course.

Up to 8 power lights can be used on the vehicles including the two head lights, but no crash bars can be used.

The prize giving will be held at the Millennium Park Pro-Cart racing arena with the pop Group "Blind Faith" in attendance.
