Police
excelled in sports last year
Many achievements were made by the Police Sports Club almost in every field of sports during the year 2001. They did well in swimming (life-saving and two-mile sea swim), taekwondo, pistol shooting, soccer (women), kabbadi, tennis and rugger ('B' division) where they have become national and all-island champions. At the moment, they are in the finals of the 'A' division soccer championship, remaining unbeaten after eight matches. In addition to these achievements, Police have emerged the All-Island State Services Champions in Athletics, Badminton and Volleyball during the previous year. Director Sports Senior Superintendent of Police Lalith Lekamge pointed out that this unprecedented improvement in all spheres of Police sports activities could be attributed to the following: Efficient and transparency in selection procedure; modern training methods; discipline dietary control; proper motivation by way of rewards and other incentives; uptodate infrastructure facilities for training activities and fair management techniques. At present Police Sports Club participate in 21 different sports disciplines and has become a force to reckon with due to outstanding achievements and team spirit of Police sportsmen and women. During the last year itself, 30 policemen and women were granted special promotions in recognition of their outstanding achievements in sports and 136 others were awarded monetary rewards amounting to several lakhs of rupees," SSP Lekamge explained. Commenting on the new Police Sports Complex at Narahenpita and setting up of a new Police Sports Library at Police Park, SSP Lekamge said "that there can be no doubt that our sportsmen and women will be encouraged to strive harder to achieve targets," added SSP Lekamge. |
