sponsors local rugby sevens
by LAL GUNASEKEERA At least two teams each from 28 clubs will vie for honours at the Jaguar Inter-Club Rugby 7's of the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union (SLRFU) to be worked off at Longden Place on February 9 and 10 sponsored for the first occasion by Regency Automobiles (Pvt) Limited. Deputy President of the SLRFU Ibrahaim Hamid, revealing the number of teams said that the format has not yet been finalised, and the President of the SLRFU. Captain Harsha Mayadunne, speaking at the media briefing on Friday night at Trans Asia Hotel said that he was grateful for Regency Automobiles coming forward to sponsor this tournament for the General Denzil Kobbekaduwa Memorial Trophy, and hoped that they will continue being involved with rugby. The General Manager of Regency Automobiles, Chamidna Perera, said that the company was delighted to be a part of rugby and looking forward to continue with the sponsorship. He, too like the SLRFU officials thanked Asanga Seneviratne for being the 'link' between the SLRFU and Regency Automobiles in arranging the sponsorship and hoped that rugby will reach international standards in the very near future. The local season gets under way on February 2 and 3 with the Ruhuna 7's at Galle, while the first-round of the Caltex 'A' Division League will be from May 3 to June 30 and second-round from July 5 to August 4. The Caltex 'B' and 'C' Division's first-round is from June 4 to July 31 and second-round from August 12 to 20 with the promotion/relegation game scheduled for August 11. The Clifford Cup Knock-Out Championship is from August 14 to 24 and the President's Trophy Knock-Out Championship from October 18 to 27. Four international 7's tournaments too are on the cards. They are IRB World 7's Series in China on March 16 and 17, Hong Kong 7's from march 22 to 24, IRB World 7's Series in Malaysia on April 27 and 28 and Singapore 7's on April 20 and 21. The Singer/Sri Lankan 7's will be played on September 14, 15 and 16. Sri Lanka will also play China in their RWC qualifying game at Longden Place on March 10 and against Kazakhstan on April 21 away. The Asian Games will be in South Korea from September 28 to October 14, while the Asiad will be in Thailand from November 2 to 9. |
