by Jayanthi Liyanage

The five sureties who had bailed out an accused, alleged to have abused his own two daughters and now absconding, would be released on Rs. 1 million surety-bail each, Judge Sarath Ambepitiya ruled in High Courts Hulftsdorp, another day. one of the sureties was the mother of the accused.

The Judge also ordered the passport of the accused to be impounded and instructed the Department of Immigration and Emigration not to allow him to leave, the country. Two other sureties were also issued notice to be present at the next hearing on February 7. One of them has now filed a motion to have the case called on recently.

The accused is alleged to have abused the two girls aged 4 years and 10 months respectively in 1999. The case was almost over and Senior State Counsel S. Thurairaja of the Attorney General's Department, who led the prosecution, was due to make his final submission on January 17, 2002. But the accused did not appear in courts and Judge Ambepitiya directed police to arrest and produce him in chambers before Janurary 24.

P.E.A.C.E. (Protecting Environment And Children Everywhere) befriended the victim-children and has legally monitored the case since October 1999.
