Dehiwela and Kohuwala police contribute Rs. 26.8m to state coffers by CHAMIKARA WEERASINGHE The Dehiwela and Kohuwala police stations have contributed Rs. 26.8 million to state coffers and helped in the eradication of crime in the Mount Lavinia District in the last year. Moreover, the crime detectives of Dehiwela police in a series of raids carried out by them, had been able to take into custody an LTTE suicide bomber along with two suicide jackets and an assortment of weapons comprising six hand grenades, and six sets of firearms. According to senior police sources, investigations carried out by the Kohuwala Police Vice Branch, led by RSI Suresh on the instructions of OIC IP Udaya Silva, had resulted in generating Rs. 4.6 million by way of fines involving vice-related cases, out of which Rs. 3.4 million was obtained from heroin detections. Meanwhile, the Kohuwala Crime Detection Branch, headed by IP Ratnaweera, had been instrumental in solving 231 crime cases with recovery of cash, jewellery and other valuable items totalling to Rs. 7.2 million, the sources said. The Dehiwela Police Vice Branch, led by RIP Manjula on the instructions of OIC IP Priyadarshana Samaranayake, had been able to recover Rs. 3.3 million as fines including Rs. 1.8 million obtained from heroin detections. The branch had generated Rs.250,000 by way of imposing fines on sex establishments in the city raided by it. Also, the Crime Detective Branch of Dehiwela police, headed by SI Prasanna de Silva had been successful in solving 231 crime cases reported in 2001 with recovery of cash, jewellery and other valuable items summing to Rs. 11.1 million, the sources said. The Kohuwala and Dehiwela police had carried out their operations in the last year on the initiative of ASP Nalaka de Silva. |
