Five half centuries help Sri Lanka to big lead

by PELHAM JURIANSZ

Sri Lanka's 'A' frontline batsmen had a field day against some mediocre Kenyan bowling in the morning and afternoon session just after lunch but some tight bowling mid afternoon and after tea saw the Sri Lankans lose six wickets for 39 runs and finally declare at 414 for 9 wickets in reply to Kenya's first innings score of 292 all out on the third day of first unofficial Test at the P. Saravanamuttu Stadium yesterday.

Sri Lanka thus enjoyed a lead of 122 runs on the first innings.

Michael Vandort and Ian Daniel started the day cautiously but grew in confidence and put on 70 for the second wicket before Daniel fell for 71.

Vandort continued the good work and the innings was built around his composure and he together with T. M. Dilshan continued the good work and added 82 runs for the third wicket before Vandort fell for 75 trapped lbw.

Then came the most exciting partnership of the day when T. M. Dilshan was joined by the enterprising Chamara Silva and the pair went for quick runs and Dilshan in the process, lost his wicket going for a run that just wasn't there and got run out for a well compiled 82 when a century was in sight.

Chamara Silva was joined by skipper Upul Chandana but it was then that things turned around for the hapless Kenyans and they grabbed six wickets in the space of 39 runs.

A last wicket partnership between Prabath Nissanka using the long handle and Ruchira Perera helped swell the score.

Kenyan bowlers M. Sheikh and Collin Obuya captured five wickets between them and there were two run outs amongst the six quick wickets.

Kenya were 31 for 1 at stumps on the third day.
