Common directory for all phone subscribers

Directories are published by various groups to facilitate quick communication. With Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT) Suntel, Lanka Bell and various mobile companies providing telephone facilities, the need for a simple telephone directory which covers all these connections has become the need of the day. Lanka White Pages (Pvt) Ltd., a company with foreign collaboration has commenced operations to fulfil this need.

Managing Director Errol Jackson said: "Since the inclusion of domestic connections is a herculean task, Lanka White Pages has set about to make a start with corporate clients in the Greater Colombo area."

The company intends visiting each and every outlet having a telephone connection to have them listed in the directory for a competitive rate.

"Apart from the regular listing as per the normal telephone directories issued by SLT, Suntel and Lanka Bell to their clients, this would also have a Classified Section and Brand Section, The Brand Section will have the firms which are authorised distributors for a particular brand; the company also hopes to have a facility for authorised distributors to list their approved sub agents. This will facilitate outlets to know the contacts nearest to them to obtain their supplies," he said.

The directory will come out in January 2003. The company is also toying with the idea of making this available in CD form for IT-oriented clients who may feel that having a directory in the form of a book is too cumbersome. The CD and printed directory will be distributed free of charge.

"Incidentally, Lanka White Pages will be the first in Sri Lanka to come out with a telephone directory encompassing the clients of all telephone facility providers and have this in the form of a CD", Jackson said. He also added that it was their intention to cover the major towns once they complete the Greater Colombo Area and eventually the whole of Sri Lanka.
