Swadeshi wins National Productivity Award

Swadeshi Industrial Works Ltd., a local producer of herbal-based personal care products, was adjudged the runner-up in the small and medium category at the recently concluded National Productivity and Quality Awards Ceremony 2001.

The award, which represents the highest form of recognition at the national level of a company's contribution to value addition, product quality control, productivity improvement and human resources development, was the first of its kind won by Swadeshi.

Amari Wijewardene, Chairperson of Swadeshi said a number of productivity improvement initiatives were undertaken during the last one and a half years from automating production processes and augmented technology, to introducing 5S methods to improve work practices.

Training the workforce received priority, which helped to change attitudes, in turn building commitment to quality and better performance, she explained. "We have competed successfully with multinational giants for several decades to carve out significant market shares for our flagship brands like 'Khomba', 'Khomba Baby', 'Rani Sandalwood', 'Apsara', 'Perlwite' and 'Sportsman Plus', and this award will encourage us to strive for even greater heights," Ms. Wijewardene commented.

Incorporated in 1941, Swadeshi is today a market leader in herbal soaps, and operates a large and modern factory that employs about 300 people. A strong focus on innovation, research and development has enabled the company to establish many firsts. Swadeshi introduced to Sri Lanka its first herbal beauty soap, the first herbal baby soap, the first laundry soap with AOS and the first, and possibly the world's only carbolic herbal soap.

The National Productivity Award scheme, organised by the National Institute of Business Management, was evolved to encourage enterprises to focus on productivity and create a competitive atmosphere that will facilitate the promotion of productivity.

The 2001 awards presentations, the ninth in succession was held in association with the Ministry of Enterprise Development, Industrial Policy and Investment Promotion and the Sri Lanka Standards Institution.
