Bribery Commission going great guns

by Vernon Perera

Since the revival of the Bribery Commission, its performance has improved significantly, and it could even fare better with a hundred per cent staff, and the ready co-operation of the informants who did not back out for various reasons at the last moment.

The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption had received 1,720 complaints in 2001 as against 975 the previous year. The Commission took prompt action against some of the cases by organizing raids as those complaints were made before the acts were committed, Commission sources said.

The Commission conducted 45 successful raids on such complaints in 2001 as against five the year 2000. In all such cases, the suspects were immediately produced before the magistrates' courts in the respective distrcts where the raids were conducted.

Of the complaints received, 1,297 were referred for investigations in 2001 as against 612 the previous year. Investigations into 298 cases were completed last year as against 72 the previous year.

On completion of investigations 245 cases were closed without prosecution for want of evidence. However,in the year 2000, only 68 such cases were closed. Court action has been taken against 29 other cases where investigations were completed last year, as against 10 cases the previous year.

Where prosecutions are concerned, 14 cases were filed in the magistrates' courts and 15 in the high courts in 2001 as against six and four respectively in 2000. The accused in 19 cases were convicted in 2001 as against six in 2000.
