Independence celebrated in Washington

The 54th Anniversary Independence celebrations was held in Washington DC. Cultural show for Sri Lankans was held on February 3rd at the Albert Einstein High School Auditorium from 6.30 p.m.

The national flag was hoisted by Ambassador Dr. Warnasena Rasaputram to the strains of the National Anthem was followed by multi-religious observances and blessings and the reading of the President's and the Prime Minister's messages in all three languages, the Ambassador closed the official session with his message to the Sri Lankan community, he said, "You have worked very hard, with great feelings for the country of your birth, to raise funds and establish a bipartisan Caucus in the Congress.

Sri Lanka is one of the very few countries that have established such a Caucus to look after our interests and promote them in Congress and outside, for our greatest good."

As the cultural show of dance and song presented by the Youth Dance Troupe of Washington DC's Ranga Kala Kavaya ended, the Sri Lankan guests were treated to dinner by the Embassy staff.

On February 4th, Ambassador Dr Rasaputram hoisted the flag at the Embassy premises to the chanting of Seth Pirith by the Buddhist monks of Washington Buddhist Vihara and the International Buddhist Centre in Wheaton, followed by reading messages.

In the evening, the US officials and members of Congress, the diplomatic community, the media and other officials the Embassy works with, were invited to a reception at the Ambassador's Residence.
