Lanka 'A' spinners rout Kenya by an innings in three days

by SA'ADI THAWFEEQ reporting from Matara

MATARA, February 9 - Kenya suffered one of their worst defeats in a four-day game, when they were thrashed by an innings and 152 runs inside three days by Sri Lanka 'A' in the second unofficial cricket Test played at the Uyanwatte Stadium here today.

Kenya were dismissed for totals of 220 and 202 after Sri Lanka 'A' had amassed 574 for six declared. With this win Sri Lanka 'A' took an unbeatable 2-0 lead in the three-match series having won the first Test played at the Sara Stadium last week by ten wickets.

In contrast to the second day when only three wickets fell while 400 runs were scored, today's play produced 300 runs and 18 wickets.

The fact that opener Ravindu Shah and Steve Tikolo scored centuries in the two Kenyan innings, gave an indication that there was nothing wrong with the pitch which was still good for batting, but it was the Kenya's approach that cost them the match.

Shah batted beautifully for 268 minutes for his chanceless knock of 106 scored off 196 balls and comprising 15 fours in the first innings. Tikolo's hundred by contrast was with a few blemishes being dropped before he had scored, and then again at 11 and 57 before he was finally dismissed for 117, cutting a ball to cover point. He batted 168 minutes and faced 133 balls hitting 16 fours and two sixes.

It was more of the inexperience of the Kenyan batsmen to bat under pressure and their inability to build an innings and bat out session by session that contributed to their downfall than anything else.

This is not in anyway taking away the excellent display of bowling put up by the spinners Upul Chandana, Muthumudalige Pushpakumara and Rangana Herath who claimed 17 wickets in the match. Tillekeratne Dilshan bowling fast off-breaks also chipped in with a wicket which meant that in the entire match, only one wicket was taken by the quick bowlers.

Kenya began the day at 122 for two and needing to score 424 to make Sri Lanka bat again. But by lunch they were fighting with their backs to the wall having lost six wickets in the morning session for 90 runs. They were soon all out for 220, six minutes after lunch with Thomas Odoyo unable to bat because of a hamstring injury on his right leg. Manager Harinda Shah said that Odoyo who is receiving treatment for the injury would be out for at least five to six days. He hoped that Odoyo would be fit for the third and final unofficial Test beginning at the Rangiri Dambulla Stadium on Thursday.

Following on, 354 runs in arrears, they made the worst start, when Kennedy Otieno was trapped lbw by Ruchira Perera off the third ball of the innings.

Despite Tikolo's counter-attack against the Sri Lanka 'A' bowlers, wickets continued to fall at regular intervals and by the 86th over of the day they were once again back in the pavilion for 202. Skipper Upul Chandana whose blistering knock of 194 knocked the fight out of the Kenyans, was again in the thick of it when he captured four wickets for 10 runs off 9.2 overs to finish with figures of four for 23. He ended the match with six wickets. Herath and Pushpakumara took five in the match.
