Singapore promises aid at war's end by Chulavansa Sri Lal in Singapore Singapore is committed to extending its fullest support for the development of Sri Lanka once the war ends and peace is achieved, Singaporean Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong has assured Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe. The Singaporean leader gave this assurance during official talks with the visiting Sri Lankan delegation headed by Prime Minister Wickremesinghe at the Singapore Prime Minister's official residence in Singapore on Friday evening. "Without peace, it is not possible to develop a country," Premier Goh pointed out to the Prime Minister. Requesting the Sri Lankan leader to fulfil his task to bring about peace, the Singaporean Premier said that Singaporean investors were ready to invest in Sri Lanka once the situation stabilises. He observed that the Sri Lankan economy had been devastated by the war. Premier Wickremesinghe, agreeing with the Singaporean leader, said that his Government had understood clearly that the only way to extricate Sri Lanka out of its current crisis was to end the war and was making every effort to this end. He expressed his gratitude to the government of Singapore for its readiness to extend a helping hand to Sri Lanka. Following the talks, Premier and Mrs. Wickremesinghe, and the Sri Lankan delegation were hosted to a formal banquet by the Singaporean leader. |
