Russian Cosmonaut for 45th Anniversary celebration of diplomatic relations between Russia and Sri Lanka The Sri Lanka-Russia Friendship Society in association with the Russian Centre in Colombo is hosting the 7 day visit of Vladimir Afanassyevich Lyakhov and his delegation. The delegation is expected to arrive on February 21, 2002 to celebrate the 45th Anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Russia and Sri Lanka. The celebrations will be on February 26th at 4.45 pm at the Russian Centre. The public will have the opportunity to meet them. The Sri Lanka Russia Friendship Society plays a very active role in promoting and cultivating bilateral relations between the two countries. Vladimir Afanassyevich Lyakhov, the Russian Cosmonaut was born on July 20, 1941, he became a cosmonaut in 1967 and had spent 333 days in space aboard three space flights including the Mir space station. In 1979, Lyakhov made his first space flight aboard the Salut 6 space station. Lyaknov and his crew spent 175 days performing experiments. In 1983 Lyakhov flew aboard the Salyut 7 on a resupply mission. This mission forced Lyakhov and the rest of the crew to stay at the station an extra 2 months, it was on his third space flight aboard Soyuz TM-6 Lyakhov visited the Mir space station. Lyakhov is the current President of the Russia-Sri Lanka Friendship Society which is based in Moscow. |
