Jean Decroos, world class cellist to play in Colombo

Music lovers will have the rare opportunity to hear a world class cellist play in Colombo at two concerts this coming week - Jean Decroos, a former principal cellist and soloist of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam, who is now a member of the acclaimed Guarneri Trio.

Jean Decroos will perform as one of the soloists in Haydn's Sinfonia Concertante on February 18 at a Concert by the Amsterdam Chamber Orchestra at the Lionel Wendt Theatre. The Concertante is scored for full orchestra and four soloists and is a hybrid between a symphony and concerto. The other soloists will the Concertmaster of the ACO, Ron Beek (Violin) Nora Wolfensberger (Oboe) and Ludian Schaling (Bassoon).

At the 'Spice Route Concert' on February 22 at the Galle Face Hotel, Jean Decroos will be the soloist in the Sri Lanka premiere of Friedrich Gulda's jazz cello concerto, a work requiring exceptional virtuosity. Scored for cello and wind ensemble, double basses, guitar and percussion it combines classical music with rock, jazz, pop and folk music.

Jean Decroos was born in Calais (North-France) and studied at the Conservatory in Paris with Paul Tortelier and Andre Navarra. In 1955 he went to Italy where he made his first recording the Cello Concerto of Luigi Boccherini, with the Chamber Orchestra of Florence.

He has won many first prizes at international cello competitions including Tel Aviv (Pablo Casals), Geneva (Concours International) and Liege (Casals-Kreisler).

In 1962 Decroos was appointed first cellist of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. A high point of his many solo performances with the Concertgebouw was the Dutch premiere in 1970 of Frank Martin's cello concerto, attended by the composer and conducted by Bernard Haitink.

He has made many recordings including the cello concerto of Dvorak with the Residentie Orchestra of The Hague, the six solo suites by J.S. Bach, and with his wife, the pianist Daniele Dechenne, the Sonatas of Faure, Debussy and Brahms.

A co-founder of the famous 'Guarneri Trio', Jean Decroos has recorded seventeen piano trios, the latest being the five by Brahms. He plays on a very precious 'Giovanni-Baptista Rogeri' made in Brescia, Italy in 1696.

The other works at tomorrow concert at the Lionel Wendt will be arias sung by Gayathrie Peiris from Mozart's Marriage of Figaro and Bizet's Carmen, and Schubert's lyrical Symphony No. 5.

The concert on February 22, 'Spice Concert' at the Galle Face Hotel will open with two motets by the great Dutch composer Sweelinck written around 1602. In addition to Gulda's Concerto the other works are Mozart's tuneful Serenade No. 10 for 13 wind instruments and Bach's delightful Brandenburg Concerto No. 3. The Symphony Orchestra of Sri Lanka and the visiting Amsterdam Chamber Orchestra will join together to play as one orchestra at this concert which marks the 400 years relations (1602-2002) of Sri Lanka and the Netherlands.
